When the Pilgrims arrived, they arrived right before winter. They didn't have enough food when they came. Half of the colony died. Even before winter, they were so busy getting food, they didn't have time for anything else. The Pilgrims blew off course, and were not where they wanted to be. They wanted to go to Virginia, which was already settled with food. But that didn't happen. After Plymouth and Jamestown, the colonists did not have as many hardships.

The settlers were mostly Christian Puritans. The Puritans did not want to separate from the Church of England. The Pilgrims did want to separate. The Puritans thought that worship did not need big ceremonies or music, and that all church members should be equal. John Winthrop was a Puritan. Puritans made a law that parents needed to teach their children to read so they can read the Bible.
The Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts and had the first Thanksgiving with the Native Americans. Native Americans in Massachusetts traded with the people from Europe. When the settlers came to Massachusetts, the Native Americans welcomed them and they taught them how to live in the land. But the Native Americans and Europeans didn't always get along, so little wars broke out. Many Native Americans were killed by war and getting sick.
Massachusetts's geography is very forest like. With steep hills that are thick with trees. Mt. Greylock is in Massachusetts. Massachusetts has lots of rivers and rocky soil that is difficult to grow crops in. Massachusetts borders the Atlantic Ocean. It also borders NH, RD, CT, and NY.
Because Massachusetts is near the ocean, it affected the economy. The most used jobs were fishing, trading, and ship-building. The Puritans grew different types of plants and crops. That was helpful so that if one crop failed, they still had a lot more to choose from. The settlers taxed the people and got money to use for schools.
